Why are some romance books listed under fiction as their genre?

Posted by: miz helena  /  Category: romance,

I’ve noticed at my local bookstores, Chapters, Indigo and Coles here in Canada, that there are some romance books in the fiction section. For example, Nicholas Sparks books are all in the fiction section as well as Jane Austen and others that are clearly romances. It’s not that they’re the cheesey romances you would find in the supermarket, but they’re still romances, why aren’t they in the romance section? What makes these in the fiction and the other romances in romance? Where do you draw the line?
Thank you.

There are two very distinct types of romance novels: classic romance and modern romance. Modern romance was born in the early 1970’s. It’s somewhat trashy and explicit. The romance section is populated by modern romance novels. Pick up a romance from the romance section and read it. Read a few of them. Compare what you’ve read to Jane Austen. The differences in the two types should be crystal clear.

Other novels may contain some romance without having romance and sex being the driving force behind the story. I call these classic romance, and they areshelved within the general fiction section. This is done to provide a clear separation from the modern romance novel. Examples of classic romance include Atonement, Birdsong, Pride and Prejudice, and Corelli’s Mandolin. Sure there is romance in the novels, possibly even some sex. However, the main story is not simply how two people hooked up.

Is it easier for people who speak one Romance language to learn another Romance language?

Posted by: miz helena  /  Category: romance,

I speak Brazilian Portuguese (Not sure if this is a Romance language but Portuguese is so I think it counts) and English (I know this isn’t a Romance language). My friend who only speaks English said that it would be harder for me to learn French but I said since I can already speak a Romance language fluently then I will have less trouble learning another Romance language, but she thinks this isn’t true. So is it easier for people who speak one Romance language to learn another Romance language?

If you speak "American english" you can understand also "British english", right? So, it is the same with portuguse. There is no such thing as "Brazilian portuguese". We Brazilians speak portuguese! If you go to Wikipedia you will read: "The official language of Brazil is portuguese, it is spoken by 99% of Brazilians".

The differences between "Brazilian portuguese" and "European portuguese" are mainly the accent. It is like "American english" and "British english". There is no "two english languages", but just one with different accents. It is the same with portuguese language.

Check this, the same text in "Brazilian portuguese" and in "European portuguese".
Listen to both together:
http://interludico.blogspot.com/2011/11/sotaques.html

And yes, portuguese is a romance language. The romance languages (also called neolatin languages) are: portuguese, galician, spanish (castilian), catalan, french, italian, romanian etc. Search in Wikipedia to know more about it.

Check this link about the four most spoken romance languages….
Listen to them:
http://interludico.blogspot.com/2011/11/linguas-neolatinas-romance-languages.html

In the link above you will hear spanish (castilian), portuguese, french and italian (spoken and singing). It is not the same text, anyway you can see how similar they are.

And yes, it is easier to learn another romance language since you already know one. I am Brazilian, my native language is portuguese. But I can understand galician, spanish (castilian), italian and a little french.
